When you turn suddenly while pulling doubles, which trailer is most likely to turn over?
Answer: A. The rear trailerRearward amplification, the crack-the-whip effect, grows toward the back of the rig. A rearward amplification of 2.0 means the rear trailer is twice as likely to turn over as the tractor, and the last trailer of triples can roll 3.5 times as easily as a 5-axle tractor-semitrailer. Steer gently and avoid quick lane changes.

Compared with driving a single vehicle, driving a combination vehicle:
Answer: A. Takes more skill, because the vehicle is usually longer and heavierCombination vehicles are usually heavier and longer than single vehicles, so their drivers need more knowledge and skill: how the rig rolls over, skids and off-tracks, how the trailer air brakes work, and how to couple and uncouple safely.

Which two things do the most to prevent a rollover in a combination vehicle?
Answer: C. Keep the cargo as close to the ground as possible, and drive slowly around turnsA high center of gravity makes the trailer tip easily, and so does speed in a turn. Low, evenly spread cargo and slow, smooth turns keep the rig upright.

Because of rearward amplification, a driver of a combination vehicle should:
Answer: D. Steer gently and smoothly and avoid sudden lane changesA sudden movement of the steering wheel can tip the trailer over. Follow far enough behind other vehicles (at least 1 second for each 10 feet of vehicle length, plus 1 more second over 40 mph), look far down the road so you are not surprised into a sudden lane change, and slow to a safe speed before a turn.

A bobtail tractor (one without a trailer):
Answer: A. Takes longer to stop than a tractor-semitrailer loaded to its maximum weightWithout the trailer's weight, the tractor's stiff suspension and strong brakes get poor traction and the wheels lock easily. Bobtails are hard to stop smoothly, so allow more room.

How the Vermont CDL knowledge test works
You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.
Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by Vermont; the current ones from Vermont DMV are in the next section. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
