The safety relief valve on an air tank usually opens at:
Answer: C. 150 psiA safety relief valve is installed in the first tank the compressor pumps air to. It protects the tank and the rest of the system from too much pressure and is usually set to open at 150 psi. If it releases air, something is wrong; have a mechanic fix the fault.

You are in the correct low gear on a long downgrade and your safe speed is 40 mph. Using the proper braking technique, you apply the brakes until your speed drops to about:
Answer: B. 35 mph, then releaseBrakes on a long or steep downgrade only supplement the braking effect of the engine. Once in the right low gear, apply the brakes just hard enough to feel a definite slowdown, and when your speed is about 5 mph below your safe speed (35 mph if your safe speed is 40 mph), release them. The application should last about 3 seconds. Repeat when you are back at your safe speed.

Brake fade is caused by:
Answer: B. Excessive heat from using the brakes too muchBraking creates heat. Using the service brakes too much, instead of relying on the engine braking effect, overheats them. The excess heat causes chemical changes in the lining that reduce friction and makes the drums expand, so the shoes have to move farther and press with less force. Brakes out of adjustment make fade worse.

If the yellow ABS malfunction lamp stays on while driving, you should:
Answer: B. Keep driving and braking normally; you still have regular brakes, just no anti-lockABS is an addition to your normal brakes; it does not increase or decrease your normal braking ability. If the lamp stays on after the bulb check, or comes on while driving, you may have lost ABS control at one or more wheels, but you still have regular brakes. Drive normally and get the system serviced soon.

When should you avoid using the parking brake?
Answer: B. When the brakes are very hot, or wet in freezing weatherVery hot brakes, such as right after a steep grade, can be damaged by the heat if the parking brakes are set. Very wet brakes in freezing temperatures can freeze so the vehicle cannot move. Use wheel chocks on a level surface instead. Let hot brakes cool first; if the brakes are wet, use them lightly while driving in a low gear to heat and dry them.

How the New York CDL knowledge test works
You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.
Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by New York; the current ones from NY DMV are in the next section. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
