An alcohol evaporator is used to:
Answer: B. Reduce the risk of ice forming in the air brake valves and lines in cold weatherSome systems put alcohol into the air to lower the freezing point of any moisture. In cold weather, check the alcohol level and refill it every day. Draining the tanks daily still matters.

Brake lag in an air brake system is the time it takes for air to reach the brakes. At 55 mph on dry pavement this adds about how much to your stopping distance?
Answer: B. About 32 feetWith air brakes it takes a little time, half a second or more, for the air to flow through the lines to the brakes. At 55 mph on dry pavement that brake lag adds about 32 feet on top of perception, reaction and braking distance.

In a dual air brake system, before driving you should wait until pressure in both systems is at least:
Answer: C. 100 psiPressure should build from about 85 to 100 psi within 45 seconds, and both the primary and secondary gauges must read at least 100 psi before you move. The warning light and buzzer should go out as pressure rises.

During the applied leakage test on a single vehicle, with the engine off and the service brake held down, the air loss should not exceed:
Answer: B. 3 psi per minuteAfter the first drop when you press the pedal, hold it for a minute. A single vehicle may lose up to 3 psi in that minute; a combination vehicle up to 4 psi. More than that means a leak to fix before driving.

When you pull hard on a slack adjuster, it should move no more than about:
Answer: A. One inchWith the parking brakes released and the wheels chocked, pull each slack adjuster. If it moves more than about one inch where the push rod attaches, the brake is out of adjustment and needs fixing. Out-of-adjustment brakes are the most common brake problem found at inspections.

How the New Mexico CDL knowledge test works
You take the general knowledge test first; it is required for every CDL class. Class A drivers add the combination vehicles test. Almost everyone takes the air brakes test, because skipping it puts an air brake restriction on the licence. Endorsements (hazmat, tanker, doubles/triples, passenger, school bus) each have their own knowledge test. Pass the tests and you hold a commercial learner's permit; the skills test in a truck comes later.
Fees, appointment rules and test centre locations are set by New Mexico; the current ones from New Mexico MVD are in the next section. What does not change is the content, and that is what PassRig drills.
